Arthur Kurzweil

Arthur Kurzweil has been illuminating the path of Jewish mysticism, Kabbalah, and genealogy for decades. He is a rare blend of scholar, storyteller, publisher, genealogist, and spiritual seeker.

For decades, he has served as a bridge between ancient Jewish wisdom and modern readers, making complex traditions like Kabbalah and Talmud accessible without diluting their depth. Whether through his books, lectures, or editorial work, Kurzweil’s mission has remained clear: to help others discover the richness of Jewish heritage and the transformative power of spiritual inquiry.

Born in 1951 in New York City, Kurzweil’s lifelong love of books began early. He earned a Master of Library Science from Florida State University and went on to become a prolific editor and publisher, commissioning over 650 volumes of Jewish interest during his tenure at Jason Aronson Publishers.

He also served as editor-in-chief of the Jewish Book Club and president of the Jewish Book Council, shaping the landscape of Jewish literature in America.

But Kurzweil is more than a bibliophile, he’s a passionate teacher of Kabbalah, a student of Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz, and a magician (yes, really), using illusions as metaphors for spiritual insight. His writing is infused with warmth, humility, and a deep reverence for tradition, making him a beloved figure among seekers and scholars alike.

Jewish Genealogy

Arthur Kurzweil is widely regarded as one of the founding figures of modern Jewish genealogy in North America. His work in this field is not just academic, it’s deeply spiritual, personal, and transformative.

Jewish Genealogy as Spiritual Discovery

Kurzweil’s interest in genealogy began in his early twenties, sparked by stories his father told about their ancestral shtetl in Poland. What started as curiosity quickly evolved into a profound spiritual journey.

He realized that tracing one’s lineage wasn’t just about names and dates—it was about reconnecting with Jewish tradition, reclaiming lost narratives, and understanding one’s place in a sacred continuum.

He often describes genealogy as a form of “Jewish meditation,” where each document, photograph, or oral history becomes a portal into deeper meaning. His research led him to discover rabbinic ancestors, including the Stropkover Rebbe and connections to Chassidic dynasties, which reshaped his understanding of his own spiritual heritage.

Kurzweil also co-founded the Jewish Genealogical Society in the 1970s, helping establish a network of researchers, educators, and enthusiasts who continue to expand the field today.

He is also the author of a number of books about Jewish Genealogy that are listed below.
