McGill University

McGill University, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada is a public research university established in 1821 by a royal charter issued by King George IV of Great Britain. It is one of three English language universities in Quebec.

The University is named after James McGill, a prominent Montreal merchant from Scotland whose bequest in 1813 formed the university’s precursor, McGill College.

McGill offers degrees and diplomas in over 300 fields of study, with the highest average admission requirements of any Canadian university.

McGill is one of the three universities in Quebec where English is the primary language of instruction. The other English language universities are Concordia University in Montreal and Bishop’s University in Sherbrook, Quebec.

I attended the Faculty of Management and the Faculty of Religious Studies.

Two Campuses

McGill University has two campuses with both located on the Island of Montreal:

  1. the main campus on Sherbrooke Street West is set at the foot of Mount Royal in Downtown Montreal,
  2. the second campus situated near fields and forested lands in Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue 30 kilometres (18 miles) west of the main campus


Faculties and Schools

McGill has 11 main Faculties and Schools.

Most students are enrolled in the five largest faculties, namely Arts, Science, Medicine, Engineering, and Management.

Tuition Fees & Scholarships

Tuition fees vary significantly between in-province, out-of-province, and international students, as well as between faculties. Scholarships are generous, yet highly competitive and relatively difficult to attain, compared to other institutions of higher learning in the country.


The University is one of two members of the Association of American Universities located outside the United States.

It is the only Canadian member of the Global University Leaders Forum (GULF), within the World Economic Forum, which is made up of 26 of the world’s top universities.

The purpose of this page is to provide info about the formal education that I have experienced but obviously experiencing life also provides us with understandings of many things.

I lived in a number of different Canadian cities as I was growing up and therefore attended quite a few different schools, although I am only listing those schools that I attended from high school onwards.

Before attending university I studied in a public school and then a private school where I boarded.
