Centers for Spiritual Living – CSL

Centers for Spiritual Living – CSL is a religious denomination based on Religious Science that was founded by Ernest Holmes. Their primary text is The Science of Mind (1928 version) written by Ernest Holmes.

CSL resulted from the merger of United Centers for Spiritual Living (formally, United Church of Religious Science) and International Centers for Spiritual Living (formally, Religious Science International).

Centers for Spiritual Living - CSL

Centers for Spiritual Living™ is a global community that is based in Golden, Colorado that is comprised of more than 400 spiritual communities, teaching chapters, study groups and other ministries in 30 countries.

These communities teach a New Thought philosophy that brings religion and science together and offers spiritual tools to transform personal lives and help make the world a better place.

This is done through the study and practice of Science of Mind® and Spirit, also known as Religious Science®, which holds that all life is sacred—that each human being is an expression of God.

CSL believes in Cause and Effect and teach that “it is done unto you as you believe.” In essence, our thinking and expectations create our reality. Their teachings incorporate the ancient wisdom of spiritual traditions through the ages.

People of all spiritual paths — Christian, Jewish, Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim, and others — are welcome in our communities.

We help people experience a personal relationship with the creator; promote a community of tolerance, understanding and respect; provide classes, programs, prayer and meditation; and advocate a safe spiritual community of like-minded people interested in living a spiritual life.

The Science of Mind

The Science of Mind originally published by Ernest Holmes in 1926 emphasizes positive thinking, the influence of circumstances through mental processes, recognition of a creative energy source and of natural law, and the use of what Holmes called Spiritual Mind Treatment or Affirmative Prayer.

In The Science of Mind Holmes sets forth a new relationship between mankind and God.

Holmes shows how people can actively engage their mind in creating change throughout their lives. He provides detailed steps of how to pray and meditate, heal oneself spiritually, find self-confidence, and express love.

Science of Mind: What We Believe by Ernest Holmes

What We Believe” by Ernest Holmes, was published in the first issue of Science of Mind Magazine, October, 1927.

  • We believe in God, the Living Spirit Almighty; one, indestructible, absolute and self-existent Cause. This One manifests Itself in and through all creation but is not absorbed by its creation. The manifest universe is the body of God; it is the logical and necessary outcome of the infinite self-knowingness of God.
  • We believe in the incarnation of the Spirit in everyone and that all people are incarnations of the One Spirit.
  • We believe in the eternality, the immortality, and the continuity of the individual soul, forever and ever expanding.
  • We believe that Heaven is within us and that we experience it to the degree that we become conscious of it.
  • We believe the ultimate goal of life to be a complete emancipation from all discord of every nature, and that this goal is sure to be attained by all.
  • We believe in the unity of all life, and that the highest God and the innermost God is one God.
  • We believe that God is personal to all who feel this Indwelling Presence.
  • We believe in the direct revelation of Truth through the intuitive and spiritual nature of the individual, and that any person may become a revealer of Truth who lives in close contact with the indwelling God.
  • We believe that the Universal Spirit, which is God, operates through a Universal Mind, which is the Law of God; and that we are surrounded by this Creative Mind which receives the direct impress of our thought and acts upon it.
  • We believe in the healing of the sick through the power of this Mind.
  • We believe in the control of conditions through the power of this Mind.
  • We believe in the eternal Goodness, the eternal Loving-kindness, and the eternal Givingness of Life to all.
  • We believe in our own soul, our own spirit, and our own destiny; for we understand that the life of all is God.

Ernest Shurtleff Holmes

Ernest Shurtleff Holmes was one of the foremost spiritual teachers of the 20th center. Holmes blended the best of Eastern and Western spiritual philosophies, psychology, and science into the transformational ideas known as the The Science of Mind.

Ernest Holmes

Dr. Ernest Holmes was a mystic who found God in the silence. Going within and experiencing God in the deepest part of himself was his spiritual practice.

His spirituality was reflected in his living; he believed he was one with God, and he experienced that oneness in all that he did.

As important as the mystical experience was to Dr. Holmes, he also believed that religion had to be applied to everyday life problems, as an integral part of the walk of faith. Wholeness involved the Presence, yes, but also the Power — the two faces of the dual nature of God.

Dr. Holmes developed the The Science of Mind philosophy to reflect his twin beliefs that the inner experience of God gave entry to the Power of God and that changing the way we think about our conditions causes the Power of the Universe to change those conditions to make our lives better.

Science of Mind identifies the spiritual principles that apply equally to everyone in every situation, and it teaches us how to use them for our advantage.

Spiritual Mind Treatment

He formulated a specific type of prayer, known as Spiritual Mind Treatment, that has positively changed the lives of millions.

Religious Science Movement

Ernest Shurtleff Holmes the founder of the Religious Science movement and the Church of Religious Science.
