Celtic Devotional: Daily Prayers & Blessings by Caitlin Matthews

Celtic Devotional: Daily Prayers & Blessings by Caitlin Matthews is a wonderful book of daily Celtic practices.

Drawing on the influences of early Celtic times Celtic Devotional concentrates on the seasonal quarters – Lughnasadh (Autumn), Samhain (Winter), Imbolc (Spring), and Beltaine (Summer) – of the Celtic world. Excellent complement for Celtic Shananic practice.

Recommended Reading and Audio in Shamanism

Following are my Recommended Reading and Audio in Shamanism.

I have read the books and listened to the audio listed.

Shamananism has been practiced worldwide for some 10,000 years although the names of the practice, and the practitioners, is specific to the culture in which it is found.

Recommended Reading and Audio in Shamanism

My shamanic practice in my daily life is based on Core Shamanism, Celtic Shamanism, and shamanic practices from my teachers from other cultures including Mexico, Zimbabwe, Canada, the UK, and the USA, that they have shared with me either directly or through the books and audios listed on this page.

Celtic Shamanism in particular resonated with me as my ancestral background is Scottish, Welsh, English, Russian, and Finnish.

Core Shamanism

As my shamanic practice is based on Core Shamanism I recommend beginning with two books by Michael Harner the founder of the The Foundation for Shamanic Studies:

  1. The Way of the Shaman, and his follow-up
  2. Cave and Cosmos.

These two books will give you a solid insight into the history of shamanism and Core Shamanism as well as providing you with instructions on how to begin to add shamanic practice to your life.

Celtic Shamanism

Celtic Shamanism refers to the Shamanic practices, traditions, and ways of the people native North-West Europe including England, Ireland, Isle of Mann, Scotland, and Wales.

Celtic Tree of Life in green

Predominately Shamanic Culture

The word ‘shaman’ was not used in the Celtic world. The Celtic title for “vision poet” in Irish Gaelic is File (fee’lyee) or Awenydd (ah-wen-ith) “inspired one” (Welsh).

The core beliefs of Celtic tradition are based upon an understanding, a knowing, that everything is alive and has a soul.

The Celts believed that Otherworlds interpenetrate the mortal realms in all parts of life and that spirits, faeries, ancestors, and deities associate regularly with humans.

Omens of the elements, plants, animals, and people can give premonitions of outcomes.

In fact, the Celtic early people had a predominately Shamanic culture.

Most people reading this will have heard of the famous British Shaman Merlin.

My Teachers, Guides & Mentors

Teachers, guides, mentors and coaches appear in many forms and often when least expected.

Many times you never meet them but read their words, listen to an audio or see a video. Or perhaps meet one of their students who introduces you to their work.

I have listened to many teachers over the years and heard absolutely nothing that they said. In one ear and out the other. I wasn’t ready to hear what they had to say or teach me. But years later something will lead me to them and I am ready.
