Pipeline by Bruce Johnston starts off My Morning Kickstart Music List as its upbeat surfing instrumentals really appeal to me.
The sounds also take me back to my time in California in the summer and fall of 1969. So many great memories of hitchhiking from San Diego back to Vancouver, BC., and then on to Montreal, Quebec.
Bruce Arthur Johnston
Bruce Arthur Johnston is an American singer, songwriter, and record producer best known as a member of the Beach Boys.
I enjoyed watching this wide-ranging interview with Bruce Johnston as he looks back at the Beach Boys golden sixties period and the music that built their success.
Bruce talks about the changing Californian music scene across the decade, the growth of Brian Wilson as a songwriter & producer, the triumph of Pet Sounds and the disappointment of the abortive SMiLE project.
He reflects on The Beach Boys’ story and output, as well as the challenging climate of the late Sixties as the group’s hits began to dry up.
Although I never surfed I did grow up listening to the Beach Boys and their music still resonates with me in 2019 at the age of 71.
The Beach Boys are one of the most influential acts of the rock era distinguished by their vocal harmonies and early surf songs.
The Beach Boys drew on the music of jazz-based vocal groups, 1950s rock and roll, and black R&B to create their unique sound, and with Brian Wilson as composer, arranger, producer, and de facto leader, they often incorporated classical elements and unconventional recording techniques in innovative ways.
