The Lord’s Prayer, also called Our Father, (Latin Oratio Dominica or Pater Noster), Christian prayer that, according to tradition, was taught by Jesus the Christ to his disciples.
It appears in two forms in the New Testament:
- the shorter version in the Gospel According to Luke (11:2–4) and
- the longer version in the Gospel According to Matthew (6:9–13) is part of the Sermon on the Mount.
Lord’s Prayer – short version
Our Father,
Who art in heaven,
hallowed be Thy name;
Thy kingdom come;
Thy will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
Lord’s Prayer – long version
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done;
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation;
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory
forever and ever.
Amen
